A new International Game Fish Association (www.igfa.org) world record leopard shark was landed by angler Maria de la Luz Johnson while fishing in San Diego Bay, California. She was shark fishing not too far from the shore andused a dead surfperch fish as bait. The record leopard shark weighed in at 44 lbs 7 oz and measured 162.56 cm (63 inch) in length.

The leopard shark (Triakis semifasciata) is member of the family Triakidae; this small shark is found along the Pacific coast of North America from the USA state of Oregon to Mazatlán in South Mexico. These sharks are most common near the coast, in water less than 4 m (13 ft). Large schools of leopard sharks are a very common sight in estuaries and bays , swimming over sandy or muddy f areas near kelp beds and reefs.
