SUNFISH REDAER (Lepomis microlophus)

This  redear sunfish was caught in Arizona on Lake Havasu; 5.78 lb - 2.61 kg by angler Hector Brito. Probably the biggest ever caught on rod and reel.

This predator fish is native to the Savannah River in South Carolina to Nueces River in Texas, but also north in Mississippi River and Arizona in 1946.
Length: 6 to 15 inches. Weight: 3 oz to over 6.5 lbs. May live to 7 or 8 years.

Sunfish  seem to not like baits that offer resistance such as lead weights and bite gently. It is surely better to fish with ground  worms on the bottom, without weight or not.
